#422 Investigate test-suite timing

I'm working on a fix for a problem in production, I want to make sure the tests run before commiting this fix and pushing to production -- currently this requires 11 min, and this has slowed down our ability to react to issues as they arise.
I'm an open source developer and I've just grabbed the project and want to run the tests to make sure everything works before starting to edit code -- currently this takes about 11 min.
