#660 tickets: untouched empty fields "change" on submit?

On our newforge tracker, i notice the following issue:
I typically create a ticket, leaving the size value empty.
After it is created, when I change the description of the ticket, my change message in discussion looks like:
status: open --> closed
custom_field__size: -->
I have not opened the edit for the metadata box, but it seems to think that I've changed the value somehow.
