#7207 git repos without master branch behave poorly

If a project does not have a "master" branch, it doesn't seem to display properly. The landing page says metadata missing, and selecting the branch gives a 404.

    The admin options for git & hg tools allow you to specify an alternate branch as your primary branch. So we should be able to use that and everything work without 'master'.
